An educational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that helps determine how a student learns and processes information. It assesses cognitive abilities, academic skills, and areas like attention, memory, and executive functioning. These evaluations are crucial for identifying learning disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and more, and provide recommendations for school accommodations and interventions to support the student’s learning needs.
If your child struggles with reading, writing, math, maintaining attention, organizing tasks, or keeping up academically, an evaluation could be beneficial. Other signs include frequent frustration with schoolwork, inconsistencies in performance, or a history of difficulty following instructions. An evaluation helps clarify whether these challenges are related to a learning difference, ADHD, or another underlying issue.
The entire evaluation process, from intake to the final report, typically takes 3-4 weeks. The assessments themselves are conducted over 1-2 sessions, each lasting about 3-4 hours. After the assessments, I will compile a detailed report with findings and recommendations, followed by a meeting to discuss the results with you. My services also include monthly check-ins for a year to track your child’s progress.
My evaluations are tailored to provide a detailed, individualized understanding of your child’s learning profile. Unlike school assessments, which often focus on eligibility for services, my evaluations dive deeper into cognitive and academic functioning, offering insights and recommendations that address the whole learner. I also provide ongoing support through regular check-ins for one year, ensuring your child’s progress is continually monitored.
Educational therapy focuses on building foundational learning skills, such as executive functioning, attention, and problem-solving strategies, while tutoring typically focuses on specific subject content. Educational therapy addresses the root causes of academic difficulties by teaching students how to improve their learning process, rather than just focusing on improving grades in a particular subject.
It’s best to explain the evaluation as a way to help understand how they learn best. Let your child know that the testing is not a pass/fail situation, but rather an opportunity to find ways to make learning easier and more enjoyable for them. Encourage them to do their best and assure them that it’s okay if some tasks feel challenging.
Accommodations vary based on each student’s unique needs but could include extended time on tests, reduced distractions, breaks during work, alternative test formats, or the use of assistive technology. These accommodations help ensure that students with learning differences are able to demonstrate their knowledge in ways that work best for them.
Yes! In addition to working directly with students, I offer consultations and support for parents to help them understand their child’s learning profile and advocate for their needs. I also provide guidance on how to implement strategies at home that complement the school’s support. Parents are essential partners in their child’s academic success, and I’m here to assist throughout the journey.
Each child's needs are unique, so let's talk more and develop a plan that works for your family.
